MS Access 2003: Set tab indexes

This MSAccess tutorial explains how to set the tab order for the controls on a form using tab indexes in Access 2003 (with screenshots and step-by-step instructions).

Question: How do I set the tab indexes in Access 2003/XP/2000/97? When I change the number in the tab index field, Access does not retain this value.

Answer: In prior versions of Access before Access XP, you could overwrite the tab index value in the "Tab Index" property. But with Access XP, you can no longer overwrite the value. To change the tab index order, you must do the following:

Open your Access form in design view. Right-click on the object that you wish to change the tab order. In this example, it's the text box called SupplierID.

Microsoft Access

When the properties window appear, click on the button (with the three dots) to the right of the Tab Index property.

Microsoft Access

A "Tab Order" window will appear. Select a row and drag it to the appropriate tab order position. When you have finished setting the tab order, click on the OK button.
